“We Are the Lights That Will Not Go Out is simply fantastic. Music should move you, it should make you feel and that is exactly what dep has achieved here. If the final track, We Are the Lights doesn’t manage that then you’re probably already dead.” — Games, Braaains, and a Headbanging Life
Electronica artist Danny Peck, going under the “nom de synth” dep, released We Are The Lights That Will Not Go Out this summer to many accolades like that one. I’m not sure I would describe this atmospheric, enveloping music as part of a “headbanging life,” but it would be perfect in the late morning after a long night of listening to questionable local metal and pounding Coors Lites. If there’s music that can make a hangover go away, it’s this.
The tracks are long, most over the seven-minute mark. Peck, who spoke at a TEDx Conference about the structure of electronic music, creates a soundscape that is relaxing but holds the listener’s attention. Like the album’s title suggests, this is optimistic, uplifting music.
