If there’s one pop rock band that belongs on Metal Blade, it’s Mother Feather. They put out their first LP this Friday on the internationally known metal label, kicking things off with an exuberant release party at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn.
The stage show was dripping with sex, and this is a band who knows how to tease. Keyboardist and Stamford native Liz Carena took the stage amid buzzes, feedback, and tom hits provided by guitarist Chris Foley, bassist Matt Basile, and drummer Gunnar Olsen. Carena silently ogled the crowd for what seemed like a LONG time; just when the audience couldn’t take any more, out strode lead vocalist Ann Courtney, clad in a gold-sequined dress, a shimmering gold veil that reached to her knees, and an abstract crown of gold wire triangles. And indeed, this golden woman wasted no time becoming queen of the Knitting Factory.
Courtney’s lascivious dance moves and her interplay with Carena probably inspired a lot of fantasies that night — but Mother Feather’s music is commanding enough to back up their sultry performance. Songs like “Living, Breathing” and “Mother Feather” are full-throttle rock n roll at its finest; “Trampoline” harkens back to the entendre of Led Zeppelin’s “Squeeze My Lemon” and Van Halen’s “Ice Cream Man” in attitude if not in the music itself. Softer numbers like “Beach House” have their charm as well.
And Friday night, the band poured their blood on the stage performing those songs. Courtney told the audience more than once that this show was her dream come true — after seven years as an indie band in the Big City, here they were signed to Metal Blade and preparing to tour the country. But it clearly wasn’t luck that got them there — this band has the moves, the look, and most importantly, the music. Who cares who else is on Warped Tour? Get a ticket and check out Mother Feather.
